Congratulations on your new custom paint job from the Kustom Paint Shop, now what?  A little care will help your new paint job last for years and still look new.

First thing you want to do after receiving your custom painted parts is to carefully unwrap all the items.  Avoid using sharp objects or knives, you might accidentally nick or scratch your new paint.

Here at the Kustom Paint Shop, after the parts sit on the shelf to cure (about a week), we wrap them in plastic or cloth wrap to help protect them before any bubble wrap or other protective padding is used.  This plastic wrapping needs to be removed immediately and the parts should  “air out” in a warm dry location for a day or two.

When custom painting, many different layers are applied to create the finished product.  All these different layers have thinners that are used in the spray process, these thinners need to evaporate out so the paint can cure.  This is one of the reasons most paint manufacturers

though it’s safe for fresh clear, I don’t

recommend no waxing for 1 to 2 months.  Traditional waxes can keep the thinners from evaporating and slow the curing process.

So how can you keep your paint looking great, protected and not risk paint damage?  Here at the Kustom Paint Shop,

we use 3M buffing & polishing compounds.  For detailing we currently use the Wizard brand sprays and waxes.

Wizards has many products for consumer and body shop facilities.  They have also recently created an entire line of products just for the motorcycle industry.  The motorcycle line of products have been packaged in smaller, travel friendly packaging, allowing you to take them with you on bike shows and small runs for quick detailing.

One of my favorite products is the Mist-n-Shine detailing spray.  The detailing spray is safe for fresh clear coats, in fact we use it on all the custom paint jobs before we wrap and ship them.  Mist-n-Shine detailing spray is excellent for removing fresh bug splatters, removing dust and general cleaning.  It also leaves a very shiny , slippery coat to help prevent further dust from sticking.

Another product we highly recommend is the Supreme Seal paint sealant.  This sealer replaces traditional waxes, has easy on - easy off application and gives a deep show gloss.  All

recommend using the sealer until your fresh paint has cured for at least 4 to 8 weeks, depending on your location and temperatures.

Using the correct type of cloth for applying and removing detailing sprays, polishes and sealants is also vital.  Using a t-shirt or standard cotton towel can actually put tiny scratches in the

paint, leaving your clear with a dull look after repeated usage.  Micro-fiber or Multi-fiber towels are the best choice.

These towels absorb moisture and dust better than a standard towel and won’t scratch the surface.  They can be machined washed over and over again.  I have some micro-fiber towels still in use that are 6 years old.  Wizard has there own brand of Micro-fiber towel, but any good quality one will work.

When washing the parts, try to use a gentle soap and hand wash if possible.  Wizards also has there own brand of soap.  Avoid using power washers.  Power washers have enough force to actually blow the paint off.  If your in a bind, and must use a power washer, don’t pull the trigger full when washing.  Not pulling the trigger will give a more gentle blast of soap and/or rinse water.  Always try to chamois off the bike when done washing to prevent water spots and damage to the clear.  Most water contains chemicals and/or minerals that can spot or at worst etch the clear.

You should also try to keep gasoline off of the paint.  Quickly wipe up any gas that might of dripped while filling.  Check your cross over lines and petcocks for leaks. Check around the gas opening and make sure your gas caps are venting properly.  If you have older, split tanks with the raised bung design, purchasing chrome beauty rings should be a priority.  For more information on this, see our Warranty section.

With a little time, care and use of the correct products, your custom paint job will look great for years.
